Tattoo Aftercare: What to Expect
After getting your tattoo, it will likely appear red, swollen, and a little tender. This is normal and should subside within the first few days. As it begins to heal, your tattoo may itch, flake, or peel, similar to a sunburn. This is part of the natural healing process, but it’s important not to scratch or pick at the tattoo, as this can damage the design. You may notice some scabbing or dryness in the days following, don’t worry, this is also a normal part of healing.
Over the next couple of weeks, you should keep the tattoo clean, moisturized, and protected from sunlight and water.
Expect your tattoo to go through several stages of healing: the initial inflammation and redness, the peeling and flaking, and finally, the skin smoothing out as it heals. The tattoo will generally take about 4 to 6 weeks to fully heal, but it may take a bit longer for some people. Once healed, your tattoo will look fresh, vibrant, and ready to be shown off.
Healing Process
During the healing process, it's essential to be gentle and patient with your tattoo.
Keep the area clean by washing it twice a day with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, using only your hands. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing; instead, pat it dry with a clean, soft towel. After the first couple of days, start applying a thin layer of fragrance-free cream to keep the skin moisturized but not overly greasy. It’s normal for your tattoo to itch or peel, resist the urge to scratch or pick at it, as this can affect the design and cause complications. Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid soaking it in water, including baths, pools, saunas, or the ocean.
Healing usually takes around 4 to 6 weeks, but everyone’s skin heals differently.
Pay attention to how your skin feels and looks, and if you notice anything unusual, feel free to reach out with questions.
Be patient and give your tattoo the care it deserves to ensure it heals beautifully.

Special Attention
Once your tattoo is healed, keeping it vibrant and sharp requires ongoing care. Regularly moisturize the area with a fragrance-free lotion to maintain healthy, hydrated skin, which helps preserve the detail and brightness of your tattoo. Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight by applying a high-SPF sunscreen whenever it’s exposed, as UV rays can cause fading and discoloration over time. Avoid abrasive products or harsh exfoliants on the tattooed area to prevent irritation or damage. Keeping your skin healthy overall, by staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced lifestyle, can also enhance the longevity of your tattoo’s appearance.
If you notice any fading or areas that need improvement, consider scheduling a touch-up.
Treat your tattoo with care and attention, and it will continue to look its best for years to come.
